Lodgify website builder: good enough, or build custom?

The Lodgify website builder is fast to launch. Here is when a holiday cottage should stay on it, and when a custom site wins more direct bookings.

Lodgify website builder compared with a custom holiday cottage site

If you’ve got nothing but an Airbnb listing, the Lodgify website builder is the fastest way to get something bookable online: pages, a domain, a booking widget, and the same calendar that talks to the OTAs. That’s a real upgrade. The question I get a few months later is whether a holiday cottage should stay on it, or whether a custom site in front of the same engine wins more of the weeks you’d otherwise lose to Airbnb.

I use Lodgify as the engine a lot, with a custom front when the template is the thing guests bounce from. The builder launches. It doesn’t automatically convert. Use that distinction, not a screenshot of a demo property in Spain.

What you get with a Lodgify website

A Lodgify website is Lodgify’s website builder output: property pages, a search or booking widget, payments through Stripe or Lodgify Payments, and channel sync if you connected Airbnb, Booking.com and Vrbo. Card processing is Stripe’s UK rate plus Lodgify’s 1% application fee on connected gateways — not ~1.5% all-in. The builder starts at Starter, not Basic. You can use your own domain. You can launch without hiring a developer. How to create a vacation rental website, in Lodgify’s world, is: pick a template, add photos, connect the calendar, publish.

That’s enough when your problem is “there is nowhere to book except Airbnb”. It is a productised website, not a blank design tool. Themes look related. Layouts repeat. You’re renting the front-end as well as the PMS. For one cottage that needs to be live this month, get Lodgify set up and take a test booking that blocks the OTA. Don’t wait for a custom build while the diary is still a spreadsheet.

SEO, speed, and design limits

SEO inside a builder is constrained by the template: how headings work, how fast images ship, whether you can create the location pages a UK cottage actually needs. You can rank a unique cottage name. You’ll struggle to outpace a fast, specific site that was built around the place. Speed is the same story. Builders load their chrome plus your gallery. Core Web Vitals become a support ticket.

Design limits show up on mobile: the booking widget versus the photos, the weekly total hidden behind “check availability”, a header that looks like every other Lodgify listing in the search results. Guests comparing you to Airbnb are comparing trust and clarity, not your loyalty to a template family.

None of that means “never use the builder”. It means don’t confuse launched with converting. If you want the commercial version of the same argument, it’s on holiday cottage websites. The fork here is simple: stay on Lodgify’s site, or keep Lodgify and change the site.

How to create a vacation rental website that ranks locally

How to create a vacation rental website that ranks is mostly not a theme choice. Google needs a proper domain, property pages with the cottage name and the place, useful copy that isn’t spun from a template, and fast loads. Weeks, changeover days, and a price on the page beat a generic “unique getaway” hero. Google Vacation Rentals is a free metasearch redirect — Google takes no referral fee — on Lodgify’s Professional and Ultimate plans, not Starter (features move). Individual homeowners cannot list GVR directly; under 500 properties a connectivity partner such as Lodgify is the path, and Lodgify wants an active Lodgify website for the click. Do not treat a Google Business Profile for the house as a GVR step: vacation homes are ineligible as GBP locations.

The builder can be the first version of that: unique photos, real house rules, a map, a bookable calendar. Then add pages that earn the search: how to get here, what’s on the farm, the specific unit. If the builder fights those pages, you’ve outgrown it. If it publishes them and guests can book, stay.

Local ranking for a rural cottage is a content and technical job, not a marketplace of holiday-let templates. Templates inherit someone else’s structure. I’d rather you launch on Lodgify with honest pages than buy a pretty theme that still hides the weekly price.

Custom site with Lodgify behind it

The upgrade isn’t “leave Lodgify”. It’s keep the PMS and replace the front. Widget on a site you control, or the Lodgify API on a native booking path. WordPress with the Lodgify WordPress plugin is the middle: still an embed, still Lodgify’s checkout, easier than a full rebuild, slower than a custom Next.js front.

That’s the split I used at Penmaenucha Farm: live prices, a real checkout, calendar migration, and North Wales pages, with Lodgify still the engine. The builder didn’t produce that. The booking path and the pages did. See what a direct booking website needs for the checklist the template has to pass.

Use Lodgify’s builder if you have no site. Move off it when guests bounce, when you cannot get the week’s price on the page, or when Google is sending people to a slow clone. The audit is how I tell you which of those is true, without a sales deck about “bespoke luxury”.

FAQs

Is the Lodgify website builder good for SEO?+

Good enough to have a real URL and index property pages. Weaker if you need distinctive local content, fast Core Web Vitals, and a layout Google and guests haven't seen on fifty other Lodgify cottages. Rank isn't included with the template.

Can I use my own domain?+

Yes. Point your domain at the Lodgify website. That's one of the reasons to start there instead of living only on Airbnb. Own the name even if you later put a custom site on the same engine.

Can I keep Lodgify bookings on a custom design?+

Yes. Keep Lodgify for bookings and put a custom site in front via the widget or the API. That's the setup at Penmaenucha Farm, and it's the usual upgrade when the builder caps conversion.
