Short-term rental website that takes the booking

A short term rental website that books direct is the site that can take the stay: live availability, a real total, payment, and a confirmation — without sending the guest back to Airbnb to finish. A gallery with a contact form is not a short-term rental website. This is written for US hosts. I also build the same setup for UK holiday cottages.

Design patterns live on vacation rental website design. The engine checklist is what a direct booking website needs. If the public pages are the problem and the diary is already in Lodgify, a custom Lodgify website keeps the engine and replaces the template.

What a short term rental website must do

Show the unit, the real all-in price, the calendar, house rules, and a way to pay on a phone. Fast pages. Proof the listing is real — photos that match arrival, a map, reviews you actually earned. If guests still have to write for a quote, you have an enquiry site, not a booking site.

Home page says what it is and where. Each listing gets its own property page. Don’t bury the calendar under a brand story. Don’t hide the total behind “request to book” that is actually an email form. If checkout is weaker than Airbnb’s, guests will finish where it is easier.

Engine and PMS

The website and Airbnb must share a calendar. A channel manager is how Booking.com, Vrbo and the site cannot sell the same night twice. Lodgify can power a custom short term rental website: keep Lodgify as the engine and put a custom front on the API. Guesty Lite will sell 1–3 listings from $9/month; I still would not pick it over a website-led tool for one listing. Hostaway’s public funnel starts at two listings.

Pick the PMS for the channels you actually sell. Vrbo matters more in a US mix than it does for most European cottages. Booking.com still shows up. iCal as a permanent architecture is how double bookings happen. Two-way API, then a test reservation that blocks the other channels the same hour.

Design

Property page first, not a brand story. Prices on that page. Fewer thin city-guide posts, more checkout. Vacation rental website design that converts is the same brief as a cabin in Colorado or a condo in Austin: don’t hide the calendar.

Lead with the room they will sleep in. Maps that work on a phone. House rules in the flow, not a PDF after the card is in. Speed is part of the design. A heavy gallery that never paints the booking widget is a closed listing.

Versus Airbnb-only

Keep Airbnb for discovery. The site is how you own name-search and Google for the property name. You still need the listing. You don’t need to pay Airbnb’s cut on every stay that could have found you anyway. Do not invite Airbnb guests off-platform — including after checkout. If checkout on your domain is weaker than Airbnb’s, guests will finish where it is easier — that’s a website problem, not an “Airbnb is unbeatable” law.

If you already run Lodgify and the calendar is fine, don’t rip it out to “get a website”. Put a site in front that can sell the night. I’ll tell you which layer is broken in the audit — Google, trust, speed, or checkout.

FAQs

Do I need a short term rental website if I have Airbnb?+

Yes if you want Google traffic without paying Airbnb's cut every time. Keep Airbnb for discovery. The site is how people find you without an Airbnb message. Do not use Airbnb guest details to pull the next stay off-platform.

What should a short-term rental website include?+

Live availability, a real total, payments, house rules, fast pages, and proof the listing is real. A gallery with a contact form isn't a short term rental website.

Can Lodgify power a custom short term rental website?+

Yes. Keep Lodgify as the engine and channel manager, and put a custom front on the API. I also work with UK holiday cottages the same way.
