If you're trying to pin down Vrbo commission as one global percentage, you can't. It is the host-side (and sometimes guest-side) cut on a Vrbo or Expedia Group stay, and it moves with market and fee model. Compare it with Airbnb and Booking.com on the same week, all-in, then decide whether the listing is worth another calendar to sync.
I work with UK holiday cottages. Vrbo is weaker here than Booking.com and Airbnb. US hosts see more of it. Expedia’s FY2025 10-K describes Vrbo as specialising primarily in North American leisure markets. vrbo.com is not in the UK accommodation top 5. That is not the same as “irrelevant in Europe” — Abritel and FeWo-direkt still matter. Put last year's mix through the OTA commission calculator. If those diaries have to stay honest, you need a channel manager — the explainer is channel manager for Airbnb.
Vrbo commission
How much is Vrbo commission depends on market and fee model. Direct unconnected pay-per-booking is published as 5% commission plus 3% payment processing. PMS-connected hosts in Europe, Australia or New Zealand may be charged 12–15% — that band is dashboard-only. A guest service fee exists; the percentage is unpublished. VAT can sit on the 5% where VAT applies. Read the Owner Dashboard. Do not budget from another country’s invoice if you let in Wales.
The percentage usually sits on the accommodation total plus host fees, in the same family as other OTAs. Cleaning is rarely a free pass. Your payout report is the source of truth. I'm not going to invent a “standard Vrbo %” for a search query.
Airbnb and Booking.com side-by-side
Airbnb’s single (host-only) service fee is 15.5% for most hosts, with others typically paying 14–16%. Airbnb describes 15.5% as based on its global average, not as a UK tariff. Check your payout — how much does Airbnb take. Booking.com does not publish a UK cottage rate; the percentage is in your Accommodation Agreement. Trade blogs often plan with a mid-teens figure; that is folklore, not Booking.com’s published rate. Genius is a partner-funded guest discount, not extra commission. Preferred and Visibility programmes add unpublished commission. OTA commission for holiday cottages is the UK money page. Vrbo can look cheaper on the host line and worse once guest fees and payout are included. Compare the same week on three invoices, not three marketing pages.
For most UK cottages I see, Booking.com is the OTA that shows up. Airbnb second. Vrbo is a maybe. Run the actual stays before you add another channel because the software can.
Expedia holiday rental fees
Vrbo sits in Expedia Group. Eligible Instant Book Vrbo listings can auto-distribute to Expedia, Travelocity, Trivago and TAAP. Hotels.com is not on Vrbo’s Expanded Distribution list. Vrbo-in-Expedia packages are launching globally excluding Canada, the UK and the EU. One Key spans Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo in the UK — that is loyalty plumbing, not listing distribution. cottages.com is not an Expedia brand. Expanded-distribution bookings may have higher fees; treat the invoice as truth. One channel manager mapping still has to keep every listing on the same calendar — whether that is Lodgify, SuperControl, or something else you already live in.
When Vrbo is worth listing
List if it sends stays you would not otherwise get, and the calendar is two-way. Skip it if it never converts and you are only collecting another iCal. UK holiday cottages: Booking.com first, Airbnb second, Vrbo only if the data says so. A listing that never converts is just another calendar to sync.
Direct is how you stop paying the cut on repeats who find you on Google, not a reason to delete a channel that still fills shoulder season. If you want the site and the OTAs sharing a lock, Lodgify's channel manager is the website-first option I use; SuperControl if the UK agency connections are the product. The commission page does not fix checkout.
